Officially established in 1872, Richmond Hill is a charming town abutting the north side of the GTA and one of the fastest-growing centres in Canada, with 185,540 ( 2011 census) residents. It is a high-tech centre and home to one of the most highly educated and diverse populations in the country. No longer dotted with farmers’ fields, it is literally at the centre of the thriving Regional Municipality of York.
Given the rapid pace of change, formal study is underway in Richmond Hill to determine and address the impact of urban development on the town’s cultural and historic landmarks, such as the internationally renowned David Dunlap Observatory (see photo). In 2010, Richmond Hill was chosen as the number one place to live by the Conference Board of Canada.
